Saiful Bouquet is the Structural Engineer of Record for the new state-of-the-art LAX Midfield Satellite Concourse. SB teamed with Buehler for the new concourse, the centerpiece of LAX’s $1.6B expansion. The new Terminal includes approximately 1.4 million sf of new construction accommodating 12 wide body aircraft gates. The five-level concourse will serve international flights and will connect to the main Tom Bradley building via underground tunnels (designed by others) and bus service. It will feature lounges, retail and dining, moving walkways and a state-of-the-art baggage system in a 26’ deep basement.

The terminal building is of steel construction, with a system of special moment resisting frame (SMRF) serving as the lateral wind and seismic force resisting systems for the main buildings (BRBFs are used for the ramp access control tower).  The structure is flanked by 12 3-story Gatehouse buildings, designed as free-standing, seismically isolated vertical circulation nodes, allowing access to the third floor sterile corridors and providing flexibility for future reconfiguration of gates.

Given the importance of the structure, the client expressed a desire to have the structure meet an immediate occupancy performance goal following a major regional earthquake. Saiful Bouquet performed elaborate state-of-the-art performance based seismic analyses on all of the buildings to assure the desired performance goal would be met.
