Saiful Bouquet provided structural engineering services for the conversion of a historic office building into a hotel. The existing 140,000 sq. ft. 11-story historic concrete pan joist building has a rectangular footprint and was built in 1957.

The project will strengthen the existing building to meet the requirements of the City of Los Angeles’ Non-ductile concrete seismic strengthening ordinace using new shear walls, strengthening of existing walls, carbon fiber wrap, and a new micropile foundation system.

The project strengthened the existing building to meet the requirements of the City of Los Angeles’ non-ductile concrete seismic strengthening ordinance, to allow the building’s conversion from Office to Hotel occupancy.  The structural work involved the addition of new shotcrete shear walls, strengthening of existing walls, carbon fiber wrap for both confinement, shear strength, and diaphragm drags, and a new micropile foundation system in the existing basement.  A swimming pool was added on the roof, and all aspects of the building’s historic façade were retained by the careful use of interior strengthening elements.
