Presenting our 2023 Summer Interns

Meet Lance, Lindsey, Naveed, and Samuel, tomorrow’s trailblazers of structural engineering!
They joined the Saiful Bouquet team to embark on a journey of innovation and learning, contributing to our most exciting projects. It’s an absolute pleasure to witness their passion and dedication in action.

Lance Tan
Engineer Intern
UCLA | Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering

What have you learned during your time at Saiful Bouquet?
Lance:
During my 10-week internship at Saiful Bouquet, I have been exposed to several projects; the most interesting of which were the grade beam design of an airport and the retrofit analysis of a small building. One valuable lesson I’ve learned is the identification of design considerations an engineer must make that lie outside the demand and capacity calculations. The process of developing, deliberating, and optimizing solutions is what I regard as my most valuable experience.

Can you share an inspiring quote that keeps you inspired?
Lance:
“You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t get them across, your ideas won’t get you anywhere.” – Lee lacocca

Lindsey Hollandsworth
Engineer & Office Intern
UC Davis | Civil Engineering

What have you learned during your time at Saiful Bouquet?
Lindsey:
Working at Saiful Bouquet was my first job experience, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to learn even more about structural engineering and what my future might look like. It was truly amazing to visit a jobsite and see first-hand how buildings are put together, and it makes me excited to be able to help design my own projects one day. The lessons I’ve learned these past summers will definitely carry over into my career as an engineer and I am very thankful for everyone at Saiful Bouquet who helped me along the way!

Anything else you would like to share?
Lindsey:
Thank you Saiful Bouquet for 2 great summers, I will take my extensive Excel and stationary organization experience to great places!

Naveed Asgharpour
Engineer Intern
UC San Diego | Structural Engineering

What have you learned during your time at Saiful Bouquet?
Naveed:
Saiful Bouquet gave me great challenges in such a short amount of time such as modeling structures in SAP, designing & detailing connections, responding to plan check comments, and putting together an entire calculation package. The biggest of all was a sign/canopy structure I had to design for a high school as the architectural design kept evolving but yet we had to meet the client imposed deadline. Getting through this challenges with Lyubo (Project Manager) and Renato (Project Engineer) left me inspired seeing how they quickly think of the solutions to problems that arise.

Can you share an inspiring quote that keeps you inspired?
Naveed:
“Failure is not the opposite of success. It is a part of success.” This quote from Arianna Huffington resonated with my experience a lot.

Samuel Halim
UCLA | Structural Engineering
Engineer Intern

What have you learned during your time at Saiful Bouquet?
Samuel:
Most people will think, including myself, that a 3-month worth of internship might only give you as much. However, Saiful Bouquet has taught me more than I could imagine. Being trusted to be involved in one of the biggest projects is a privilege to learn in Saiful Bouquet. Furthermore, great leaders and teams are the key to thrive in great projects. Thank you, Saiful Bouquet, and UCLA, for making this learning process possible.

Can you share an inspiring quote that keeps you inspired?
Samuel:
Saiful’s mentorship was very insightful. His words left a mark on me: “Always think comprehensively and thoroughly when tackling challenges during the project. Pay attention to problems in the early stage and formulate solutions before moving on to the next steps.”
