Saiful Bouquet has provided full structural engineering services for the replacement concourse and satellite at LAX Terminal 3 under ARUP.
The T3 Replacement Concourse is a three-level steel framed replacement of the existing two-story steel framed concourse. The new steel columns are located over an existing irregularly shaped concrete basement and tunnel that were required to be operational during the construction phase. Concrete over metal deck is supported by steel beams and steel columns. The lateral force resisting system consists of steel special moment frames in both directions, using SidePlate connections. Seismic joints separate the new concourse from the existing head house.
The satellite structure was an expansion of the existing 1959 two-story satellite building. Buckling Restrained Braced Frames were added at perimeter expansion areas to form the new seismic force resisting system.
The foundations for both buildings consist of a combination of shallow spread footings and CIDH piles.
